Olaus Magnus published the extensive history of the northern people Historia de gentibus septentrionalibus 1555 and Carta Marina was the preliminary work of his book. It was completed in Venice in 1539 and it became the main source for maps of the area until 1626 when Anders Bure’s map Orbis arctoi nova et accurata delineatio was published.

In their training they ride high horses, wear full suits of armour and are carrying heavy lances. Preferably the exercises take place in winter time on slippery ice or on snow-covered fields. The symbol in the middle could be an ear (grain), used as a votive gift to Saint Erik. In this chapter Olaus Magnus praises his brother Johannes Magnus, earlier Archbishop of Sweden. Olaus Magnus wrote the earliest comprehensive history of Scandinavia, first published in 1555. His book is titled Historia de Gentibus Septentrionalibus, “A Treatise concerning the Northern Peoples.” 2014-02-05 · Seminal lore of the Carta Marina monster opens a chapter in Olaus’s History of the Northern Peoples (1555), the first entry in Oudeman’s list of works on the sea serpent. Olaus began the voluminous map commentary upon completion of the Carta Marina. Historia de Gentibus Septentrionalibus was a monumental work by Olaus Magnus on the Nordic countries, printed in Rome 1555.

The Swedish scholar and prelate, Olaus Magnus (1490-1557), last Catholic archbishop of Uppsala, lived the latter half of his life in exile. His devotion to his country and his people never faltered, nor his determination to give them a glorious place on the European cultural map by his writings.

Olaus Magnus was formally the last Catholic Archbishop of Sweden. He got this appointment in 1544. But as Sweden had broken the relationships with the Pope in 1524, this was only Pro Forma.
